iop-102 | Introduction to Functions | Lesson
Like a program, a function is composed of a sequence of statements called the function body. In the function body, values can be passed to a function, and the function will return a value. In JavaScript, functions are first-class objects, because they can have properties and methods just like any other object.
Things You Should Know
- understand what a function is and how it is used
- understand how a function is defined
- understand what a parameter is in relation to a function
- understand what an argument is in relation to a function
- understand what a return is and how it is used
- functions, along with variables form the basic building blocks in JavaScript
- functions help to organize and reuse code
- one or many statements can be used in a function
- functions are named like variables
- may not begin a function name with numbers
- the curly braces enclose a code block for a function (the statements)
- a function must be called for it to run
- it is key to understand that functions are tied to events (button click, hoover, load, etc.)
