WAS.001.001 | Introduction to Web Application Security | Lesson
Advancements in web applications and other technology have changed the way we do business and safely share information. Many businesses have shifted most of their operations online to connect employees from remote offices and business partners from different countries so they can share sensitive data in real time and collaborate on common goals and objectives.
This has only become possible in the past 15 years thanks to the introduction of modern Web 2.0 and HTML5 web applications. Demands as a customer have changed; we want to be able to access any data we want to twenty-four seven. Such demands are also pushing businesses into making such data available online via web applications. A perfect example of this is the online banking systems and online shopping websites.
All of these advancements in web applications have also attracted countless hackers and scammers as a result of the endless opportunities to exploit the weakness in these newly developed applications and systems leading to the birth of a new and young industry; Web Application Security.
While Web Application security is its own practice area it’s focus and impacts bleed into every practice area of business considering everyone’s actions lead to impacts on a system. Web application developers have recently been taking ownership in this focus by including attention to security in their development efforts. Some organizations even have chosen to change the acronym SDLC – Software Development Life Cycle to Security Development Life Cycle.
We will begin our “security focus” journey as web application developers by just becoming familiar with what exactly “Web Application Security” is in this lesson and touch on different aspects and insights as we continue through our project.
